While designing a bathroom, we often overlook the important aspect of keeping it slip-proof. Slippery bathroom floors can be dangerous than you can imagine. Thankfully, simple design changes and smart renovations can make your bathroom flooring safe and skid proof.
Ensure Proper Drainage System :- Stagnant soapy water is one of the primary reasons for slippery floors. Therefore, the first step towards a slip-free bathroom is to ensure a proper drainage system. Make sure the drainage area is at a lower elevation as compared to rest of the bathroom’s area. Having 2 drain holes at both the corners of the bathroom is even better.
Opt for Anti-Slip Flooring :-Â Installing anti-slip flooring that generates friction and offers strong grip despite all the water is the most important step towards bathroom safety. Pebble tiles are one of the safest materials for bathroom floor that is high on the design quotient too. The tiles are available in multiple colours and complement the warm tones of sink floor area pretty well.
Separate the Shower Area :-Â Most Indian bathrooms have a commode, sink, and shower area, all in the same space, which makes the entire bathroom wet and slippery after a shower session. Creating divisions in the bathroom and having a separate shower area will prevent water (and soap) from spreading everywhere. Using glass cubicles for separating shower area will restrict the water from flowing into other parts of the bathroom. Have a bench or stool inside to sit on and dry yourself before stepping ensures that the bathroom remains dry even after.
Install Handles and Bars :-Â No matter what you do, you cannot make your bathroom 100% slip-proof. Therefore, it is a good idea to places bars or handles strategically. Manoeuvring through wet bathroom becomes a lot easier if you have something to hold on to. A handle/bar close to shower area can double up as a towel stand and can give you the needed support to lift yourself.
In addition to all this, place steady rugs and practice regular cleaning to ensure every part of your bathroom is dry, clean and slip-proof.
